Ironed curtains, bunks all made up the same, and it’s clean, ever so clean here and all around the building. The girls are hurrying to get dressed (everyone’s in white blouses and blue skirts today) and fix supper. We whisper among ourselves—really, you don’t even dare speak aloud, that’s how beautiful and festive it is today. It’s the evening of the holiday Rosh Hashanah.*
